Escaping The Rat Race

The 16th of December is a public holiday in SA and in the minds of many is the official start of holiday season. After the 16th corporate companies are generally down to skeleton staff and a mass exodus, I liken to an Aerial photo of the Great Wall of China, can be seen heading out of Johannesburg and those of us who live at the coast, brace ourselves for the onslaught.

I spent ten years being part of the Johannesburg corporate rat race and I am definitely not going to knock it. I learnt a hell of lot from amazing people who have the most incredible business acumen and at that stage in my life, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was to the contrary raised in Sea Point, and spent most of my youth on Clifton’s 4th beach. I do believe that if you are born and raised in a coastal paradise, there will always be that longing to get back to one. The day came when I decided enough was enough.

Today I call Umhlanga Rocks home, it’s a long storey how I ended up in Natal and I’m not going to bore you with the details, I do however love it here and find myself magnetically drawn to KZN’s majestic Dolphin Coast.

As I sit on my balcony taking in the chaos that has already engulfed my beloved little coastal town, a few bizarre thoughts have entered my mind. For one, Jane and I (the lady in my life) are going to escape it by going in the opposite direction. We have taken the decision to head towards the concrete jungle and spend Christmas with her sister in Johannesburg; we look forward to the peace and quiet.

I envisage it being something along the lines of Will Smith in the movie “I am Legend,” except without the freaky monster people coming out at night to hunt me, unless of course I go into Hillbrow, which I have no intention of doing. I Love Adventure Activity but HEY, I’m not that adventurous. I was thinking more along the lines of skateboarding through the streets of Sandton, this time of the year it’s probably very safe to do so. :)
