What's On A Sharks Mind?

Shortly after completing yesterday’s post entitled “Shark Personalities” I came a cross an article in “The Sunday Times” by Bobby Jordan with the header “Great Whites have one thing on their minds (and it aint you)”

It made for very interesting reading and basically says that new research shows that Great White Sharks, are a lot brainier than previously thought and have mostly one thing on their minds – Seals.

It is now believed that they have evolved sophisticated hunting techniques specifically adapted to seal behavior, not human activity. They go onto say that sharks can even make strategic hunting decisions based on changing environmental patterns.

The research was conducted by the University of Cape Town, Simon Fraser University in Canada, the Save Our Seas Foundation and The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. Monitoring is conducted using Hi-Tech acoustic tracking in a five year long ongoing project in Cape Towns False Bay.
