A world ballooning record was broken in 2011 when 343 hot air balloons took to the sky at a festival in France. Previously the greatest number of hot air balloons to take off at one time was 329, this was achieved at the same festival in 2009.

Big Blue Adventure

A whale of a time was had when this surprise big blue adventure occurred. Watch as a 25 metre blue whale surfaces alongside this boat. The whale obligingly shows off its gigantic rear. The paddle boarder who got breathtakingly close to the beautiful giant (see video) really had a grand front row seat in this unexpected marine-life movie house.

Blue whales are the largest mammals on earth and can be 30 metres long, weighing in at almost 200 tons. It is however sternly advised that the closest you should ever get is about 45 metres from a blue whale. Always ensure in South Africa that the vessel you are viewing from has a permit to approach more that 300m from a blue whale.

It has been noted that in the incident you can view above, the whale did not respond in the slightest to the paddle boarders presence.

South Africa is blessed with an extensive coastline providing many opportunities to view whales and dolphin, the prime time on the East Coast being in July when the sardines run.

Dullstroom Bird of Prey Centre is a Raptor Adventure

Dullstroom Bird Of Prey and Rehabilitation Centre, established in 1997, aims to educate the public in order to promote an awareness of the raptor species and their plight as a growing endangered species.

We are extensively involved in promoting the well-being of this awesome species.

Public support of our efforts is invaluable and we truly appreciate with gratitude any form of help we receive.

We hope that by transferring understanding of the raptors plight we will reduce the persecution of these birds which is a happening globally.

Release programme

Over the years we have been quite successful in our rehabilitation programme through which we heal birds and get them bird back into their natural habitat.

This is not as easy as it sounds and requires time and patience.

To achieve this we use two methods:

1. Falconry, where we actively hunt with the bird and get it to hunt for us. Once the bird shows that it is fit by successfully hunting with us then it is usually ready to fend for itself in the wild and is released.

2. Hacking Back is a method which involves leaving a healthy but unfit bird in an aviary for a few weeks to get used to its surroundings.

The aviary is then left open to let the bird out in its own time to go and hunt.

An unfit bird usually does not catch anything on the first few attempts and returns to the aviary to get its daily food ration.

The process is repeated until one day the bird is able to hunt and fend for itself and no longer returns.

11 day – 1,000km – 1 cause

Local adventurer, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, Paul Erskine, is currently in training to ride 1,000 km across Mongolia on horseback for 11 days in August.

The Mongol Derby is the longest horse race in the world, consisting of riding semi-wild Mongolian horses through the remote wilderness of Asia, and Paul’s doing it to raise money for the orphaned and abandoned children of Fairhavens Babies Home in KwaZulu-Natal.

Paul has always had a passion for extreme adventure. To date he has crossed the North Pole on a sled pulled by huskies, visited five of the seven wonders of the world,climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, travelled to 72 countries, and dived all over the world. And he still has a lot to tick off on his Bucket List.

The hostile Mongolian landscape will be Paul’s hardest challenge to date though, twenty riders testing their physical and mental mettle against the hardiest opponent, nature itself.

From the 6th of August, Paul will race semi-wild horses borne of the same bloodline as these ancient steeds, while self-navigating his way across 1,000 km of Mongolia’s rugged steppe region only stopping to change horses every 40km.

By the end of the Mongol Derby, Paul will be one of a small handful of people in the entire world who can say they have ridden in the footsteps of Genghis Khan.

NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD SET ON SUNDAY BUNGY SUNDAY 8 May 2011, Bloukrans

Local businessman, philanthropist and single father Scott Huntly, has successfully entered himself into the history books by completing the most bungy jumps, within 24 hours.

On the 8th of May 2011 the crew from Face Adrenaline helped make Scott’s dream a reality by assisting him to complete this spectacular feat of 107 jumps off of the Bloukrans Bridge, the world’s highest commercial bungee, in a time of 09h09m38s - and that was with a break in between the jumps. Scott actually broke the record at 105 jumps which he achieved in 07h39m, smashing the previous world record which was set by New Zealander Mike Heard, who in August 2008 performed 103 bungee jumps in 10hrs19 min under the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The combined effort from the team and Scott has successfully placed Scott’s name in The GUINNESS WORLD RECORD books as the man with ‘the most bungee jumps in 24 hours’.

This event has generated vast amounts of awareness for the crucial need for the uplifting of communities in South Africa. Scott’s main aim on this project was to raise funds to uplift communities, especially in terms of nutrition, education and fitness (overall wellness).

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the help from his sponsors, Ferrum Crescent Limited, Sylvania Platinum Limited, Magnum Mining & Exploration Limited, Bezant Resources Limited. Our partnership with Let’s Play will allow us to support community projects that use sport to bring about required the upliftment. Let’s Play’s aim is to elevate awareness of our social situation and to introduce and encourage play, activity and sport in schools and at home. Scott is well on his way to achieving his goal and commencement on community initiatives will begin soon.

Elephant rules for the road

South Africa is a marvelous country to holiday in and tour with it's wealth of wild life areas. The slide show above is a reminder that in South Africa the benefit of abundant wildlife comes with a proviso, RESPECT NATURE. When you enter a conservation area, wildlife park or game reserve do so with this motto foremost in your mind.

As you can see above, the driver of the white sedan did not respect that nature had honoured him with trust, giving him a close-up view and when the said driver decided to blatantly dishonour the trust offered, the elephant showed him who was boss. Not much fun if you ask me!

So in conclusion never overtake an elephant, it is unacceptable and will not be taken lightly.

Twenty Thousand Bikers in Margate

Twenty Thousand bikers descended upon Margate during the last weekend of April 2011. This festival is predominantly an adventure into the world of Harley-Davidsons and other impressive road bikes pale in comparison. What is it about a Harley Davidson that is indefinably special?

Margate have even renamed their beach front road: Harley Davidson Drive. The black and orange bunting promoting Harley Davidson, flew proudly down the main street.

The ambience of a friendly tolerant crowd, delicious food on hand and the ocean for a distraction melded into all wholly satisfying slice of enjoyment.

Late into the night roars and growls could be heard across the seaside town evoking echoes of the African jungle coming from beautiful metal beasts prowling the tarmacs of Margate.

High Five for Wild Five Adventure

Last year we introduced you to Zendi, a Durban wife and mom who decided to make being nearly 40 remarkable by taking her first skydive, she jumped and loved it. Zendi shared that she would like to do a big swing next so we chatted to Wild Five at Oribi Gorge, near Margate and they invited Zendi to visit for the experience.

This Saturday dawned bright and beautiful and Zendi spontaneously decided it was a great day for adventure. They headed down from Durban for the day and Bryn, Zendi’s younger son who still has to notch up his first skydive, decided to join his Mom and jump into the Oribi Gorge.

This is a mighty big rush, it is a 165m fall into the gorge and they both did it!

Zendi said afterwards, ‘It is better than skydiving!’ She was ready to repeat the swing all over again, straight away!

They were blown away by the expert attention given by Richard their jump technician, he explained each aspect of the big swing in detail and clearly highlighted the safety information. Wild Five also offer bungy jumping.

Zendi has given this experience a whopping12 out of 10! As to what is next, we'll all be waiting to hear.

This wave is being created by a tidal bore, which results when the incoming ocean tide travels up a river against the flow of the river. These bores are usually insignificant and soft, but the wave found in Indonesia is powerful. It reaches heights of around 9 metres!

Internships at White Shark Africa

We had have lots of browsers showing interest in South African Shark adventures and decided to share more about what WHITE SHARK AFRICA offer for interns.

They cater for internships of up to 6 months duration. Interns are taught a more in-depth approach to not only research and data collection, but also from the commercial aspect of eco tourism and conservation.
They only take two interns per 6 month period.

If you chose to do an internship your first month will follow the structure of the original programme. After this month features of the intern programme, dependent on duration of stay, will include:
Seamanship skills.
Learning to pilot a tagging vessel with the option to complete a skippers course at own cost.
Data collecting and collating.
Liaising with local authorities, fisherman and schools with regards to conservation.
Helping with the day-to-day running of the programme including leading and supervising students.
Hands on experience with eco tourism.
Learning to give lectures on sharks to small groups.

They have conducted research over the last 15 years in the Atlantic region of South Africa.

Their project is conducted in the Indian Ocean to ascertain the different behaviour aspects of Great White Sharks in these warmer waters.

The tagging aspect of the programme and internship will be to ascertain the different species and numbers of those individual species with a view to conservation measures necessary for their survival.

The prices for the programme and internships are as follows:

Defy Gravity with Air to Air Africa

The first time man defied the laws of gravity in a hot air balloon was in 1783. From this time on it has been one of the adventure activities on many peoples must do list. This simple form of flight has not changed much in all this time. Air to Air Africa fly 3 commercial balloons. The traditional wicker baskets can carry 8 , 12 and 16 passengers. These baskets are weight related depending on the cubic capacity of their envelopes and for this reason booking well in advance is essential.

Balloons require stable air conditions and for this reason flights take place at sunrise. Passengers meet for tea and coffee 30 minutes before take off. Most of the flights take place from Lake Herritage on Heia Safari ‘s Property and a private game ranch on the Crocodile River in the Kromdraai Conservancy also known as the Cradle of Humankind, approximately 35km from Johannesburg. As all the balloons are on trailers these can be moved to a destination of your choice for larger groups.

You don’t need to be physically fit to stand for an hour while you float along at tree top height and you may get to pick a leaf from the top of a tree, or speak to passers by who have stop to take a picture of you as you drift along in relative silence. That is until the pilot burns to maintain heat in the envelope and keep the balloon in flight. Tranquil and calming are the word that most describe the experience.

Balloons move with the wind and therefore where you land no one knows. Not even the Pilot can tell you prior to flight. Each flight is different and the ground crews job is to find the balloon on landing. As tradition dictates, the landing is celebrated with a glass of Champagne and /or orange juice. You are then whisked away in the retrieval vehicle and taken for a well deserved breakfast. Air to Air Africa will then present you with a certificate to remember the day you defied the law of gravity.

Cyclists descended upon Cape Town this past weekend. Before sunrise had a chance to shed it's bright light on the City of Choice, colourful and lithe lycra bathed bodies wielding superbly crafted bicycles lifted the predawn landscape from its slumbering hues. United in the pursuit of crossing the Pick n Pay Argus finish line in the world’s biggest individually-timed road cycle race these athletes exuded a taunt atmosphere of anticipation.

Festivities extended all around Green Point with restaurants serving up carbo-boosting fare, food vendors, live music and activities were set up to entertain the spectators and cyclists. Great weather also contributed in reinforcing that Cape Town is indeed The City of Choice.

Wakeboard Action at Emanzini Country Resort

On behalf of The South African Wakeboard Association, we have great pleasure in announcing the Ronix SA Pro Wakeboard Tour Stop 3 in Collaboration with Mastercraft Boats and hosted by the Emanzini Country Resort, Vrede, Eastern Free State being held on the 11, 12 and 13 March 2011.

Just under two hours from Johannesburg, Emanzini Country Resort is the perfect holiday and weekend getaway destination. Set in the rolling grasslands of the Eastern Free State, the Resort has spectacular views of neighbouring farms and the Langberg Mountains. At the confluence of two spruits, the 49-year-old dam is the creator of a wetland that now hosts a large variety of birdlife.

Vrede is a scenic little town with an imposing sandstone church. The town lies in the North-Eastern Free State about 20km east of the N3, close to the Mpumalanga border. The town was established in 1863 by European landowners of this area. Vrede is surrounded by undulating, Highveld hills in the spine of the Drakensberg.

The town is equipped with all the basic requirements including an excellent SPAR bakery and a good selection of meat at reasonable prices. In fact, all prices of most commodities in the town seem to be reasonable! The banks have 24 hour ATM's and the folk are friendly and helpful. Vrede and the surrounding area is a rewarding tourist destination.

Emanzini Country Resort on the Vrede dam are hosting a Powerboat race meeting next weekend on the 5th and 6th March 2011. This is the first time the Powerboat Race is being help at Vrede dam which is perfectly deep and has accommodating long stretches for speed heats.

The event kicks off at 7h00 and once the entries are in and the briefing is done there will be some official practice sessions. With heats for different categories building up to the Prizegiving late on Sunday afternoon, this is a highlight on the SA Power Boat calendar.

The 2nd of February each year is World Wetlands Day. Since 1971 in Ramsar, Iran this date has been marked by a celebration of the world’s wetlands. Globally, groups gather together to spread the awareness of the huge value of our wetlands. The 2011 World Wetlands theme is Forests and Wetlands to acknowledge that it is also the UN International Year of Forests.

The slogan for 2011 is 'Forests for Water and Wetlands' a suitable call for us to see the big picture of how our eco-systems interconnect and co-exist to the greatest benefit of mankind and all living creatures. The good health of forests and wetlands help prevent floods and also act as feeder systems for our river systems, which provide the water resources that humans need for agriculture, industry and urban domestic use.

2.Where were you before you started at Stormsriver Adventures?
I started off as general worker at Tsitsikamma Khoisan Village, this is where I discovered my love for the nature and our local fauna and flora. I started gaining knowledge on our local plant life at Khoisan Village. After that I became Assistant Store Manager at Boskor Sawmills, for about a year, in the Tsitsikamma. I heard about a job vacancy at Stormsriver Adventures and applied as this was not an opportunity to be missed.

3.How long have you been working at Stormsriver Adventures?
I have been working here for the last 3 years, I started off as a Safety Guide and then progressed to lead Guide and Woodcutters specialist guide. I have attained my FGASA Level 1 and First Aid qualification amongst other certificates.

4.What hobbies or other interests do you have?
Rugby, playing pool, socializing and enjoying the nature (of which we have plenty in the Tsitsikamma!)

5.What do you enjoy most about working as a Canopy tour® guide?
First of all no day at the office / forest is the same, I met different people from all over the world on a daily basis. Each day and tour is different and interesting.
Secondly my office is the Tsitsikamma indigenous forest, this is the place where I get my “zen” back.

6.Who do you enjoy guiding the most?
All types of people who enjoy nature and want to experience one of our wonderful products.

7.What is your favorite song? Why?
'Have you ever' by Brandy. It makes me think of life and as long as I am thinking and learning I am living.

8.What is your favorite movie? Why?
Any Leon Schuster movie, a comedy like that cannot be missed!

9.Tell us something interesting about yourself.
Well I am actually scared of heights, one would not say so with being a guide that slides from one tree to the next. I have overcome this fear by always making sure I am safe and secure on the system and this goes for all doing the system. Safety is a big priority for the company and I know that I am safe even if I am 20m above the ground! I really find that I can connect with clients who have the same fear and put them at ease immediately! This makes them enjoy the experience to the max!

Angels’ Way Drop Zone at Eston are hosting a Flat Flying Skills Camp between 17th and 20th December. Any “Ex” B-Licence PASA Members that pay their PASA fees before the 17th of December and attend the skills camp will receive 12 FREE JUMPS!!

While there are rumours about a December Angel Boogie in Margate between 27th and 31st December the SkyDive Rustenburg’s December Holiday Plan to get to The Swakopmund Desert Boogie has been seeded. This is in the planning stages and we are looking at a trip leaving SkyDive Rustenburg on Sunday 19th or Monday 20th December. The destination is Swakopmund, via Sossusvlei and other interesting places. Our idea is to take the Party Bus and an Atlas Angel and head off for a few jumps at Sun Rise and at Sun Set in Sossusvlei before ending up in Swakopmund for the Famous Swakopmund Desert Boogie (since 1979) which is happening from 26th December to the 3rd of January (or, until we are all jumped out!). Turtle Adventures

Thonga Beach Lodge and Kosi Forest Lodge are about to become the turtle enthusiasts playground of choice once again! Turtle tracking begins on the 1st November at Thonga Beach Lodge and continues until 28th February each year. The Kosi Forest Lodge turtle tracking season is open from 15th November till 15th January annually.

Both lodges support the Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtle monitoring programmes. Seven species of marine turtles exist in the world's oceans today, all of them have unique lifestyles in that they travel great distances and take decades to mature. This makes turtles important indicators of ocean health. There are five species found off the Kwa-Zulu Natal Coast, namely, the loggerhead, leatherback, hawksbill, green and Olive Ridley turtles. Of these five species that occur in South African waters, only the loggerhead and leatherback females nest along our shores.

The purpose of this project is to monitor and record nesting populations of loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles along the eastern seaboard and simultaneously provide protection of the females during this vulnerable stage on the shore. Furthermore to establish an annual population census and determine distribution of nesting loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles in South Africa and Southern Mozambique.

What the Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtle Monitoring programmes have achieved so far;
• The ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts have had a positive effect on population size. Since the programme began a total of 46, 893 loggerhead and 11,509 leatherback females have nested on the beaches of The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.
• Scientific information has been obtained about the nesting and non-nesting distribution range.
• The role of Agulhas current in distribution of hatchlings has been established.
• The conservation effort contributed to the establishment of Marine Protected Areas
• Management actions are in line with international conventions.
• International recognition and collaboration were obtained for both research and management of the breeding populations of turtles and provided guidelines for conservation activities in the South Western Indian Oceans.
• The programme served to increase public awareness and create tourism benefits along the Park's beaches.

AdventureEscapades.co.za recently met with Zendi a Durban mom of two teenage boys and the wife of Johan, a parabat. This adventurous family thoroughly enjoy many aspects of the adventurous lifestyle we are spoilt with in South Africa, including the beach, 4x4 trails and jumping from planes!

Not to be outdone by the testosterone rich guys in the family Zendi who recently turned forty decided to test the popular idiom “40 is the new 20” and booked herself for her first solo jump with Skydive Durban. As the big day dawned Johan was the most anxious as the family headed off to embrace the adventure that lay ahead. The training and lectures would probably have some people bailing before the plane left earth but Zendi took it all in her stride, feeling more reassured as she gained greater insight and knowledge about what would happen next.

By the time they were suited up the nerves had settled and they were all ready for action! Zendi and Chad who also jumped for the first time had an awesome experience. Zendi said, “The height is not the issue, you are so high it is irrelevant. The scary thing is steering yourself to the Drop Zone when it is the size of a pinhead from up high. So best you pay attention in class!”

Zendi will enthusiastically encourage everyone to give skydiving a go saying, “Your life is never the same once you have jumped from a plane on your own!” This brave lady plans to keep up her skydive jumps and is looking forward to her next adventure, a big swing experience at Oribi Gorge!

A Renegade Paintball Adventure in Howick begins with a serious safety briefing from the Regimental Sergeant Major on duty. These inert gas powered weapons are potentially so powerful they are rumoured to be the latest home protection purchase of choice in South Africa. All participants are required to pay attention and they receive a full demonstration of the might exerted at full speed as well as at the speed chosen for their age and ability.

Discover Ballooning Adventure

We’d like to introduce you to a Discover Ballooning adventure. Not many people realize that ballooning is actually the safest aviation sport around. It makes sense if you give that a moment’s logical consideration.

Ballooning is slower that other air sports, gentler and somewhat nostalgically romantic but no less adventurous for all these characteristics!

Technically speaking there are three main components to a hot air balloon. The basket, envelope and burner. The basket is woven out of wicker. It is exceptionally sturdy and totally able to absorb the shock during bumpier landings. The square holes in the sides of the basket function as steps so that passengers can climb in and out of the basket easily. It’s rope handles enable the crew to load and offload the basket during transportation of the balloon.

The envelope is the large pretty parachute like portion of the balloon which fills up with hot air. It is made from an anti-porous treated rip-stop nylon fabric with load bearing webbing tape.

The burners are fueled with propane gas which heats the air inside the envelope to create lift. The burner is attached to the basket and the envelope by wires and support poles. There are hoses which feed propane into the burners from the cylinders.

The process that gets you the adventurer, off the ground requires that the envelope of the balloon is unrolled and spread out on the ground. The crew attaches the envelope to the wicker basket and burner frame. Petrol fueled fans are used for cold inflation, which is the process of blowing air into the envelope to partially inflate the balloon. This allows enough space at the mouth of the balloon to use the burners to heat the air inside the envelope. After enough air in the envelope has been heated, it will begin to rise above the basket.

Spar Ladies Race 2010

The Durban Spar Ladies' 10km & 5km road race takes place in Durban on Sunday 29th August 2010 and in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 5th September 2010. There is R10 000.00 up for grabs for the winner! PLUS more prizes for various age groups.

In Durban the race will start and finish in the People’s Park at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday 29 August. In Pietermaritzburg the Spar Ladies Race begins at Park Drive outside the Oval Cricket Stadium in Alexandra Park and finishes at the Oval Cricket Ground.

The event which is major running fixture on the road race calendar as well as a popular social and team-building occasion drew a field of 12 373 women in 2009, with 7,985 women participating in the 10km event, and 4,388 in the 5km.

Crowds in the past have been huge and enthusiastic along the course creating a festive and supportive vibe for the participants.

A new technical development for this event is that Mr Price will provide the race data management including the results using race timing chips.

Hundreds of ladies and their support teams enjoy this memorable and rewarding experience. Even more rewarding is that SPAR is able to raise significant funds for the race charity, and this year has selected Independent Newspapers Community Projects as the official race charity.

The Centurion Quad Rides venue consists of 800ha of undeveloped land and is situated in the Broederstroom area, this is ideal for all our activities. The duration of the trails is 1 hour and promises a beautiful, scenic experience.

Elandskloof Trout Festival

The Elandskloof Trout Festival at Elandskloof Trout Farm is the 5th of these popular annual events. It happens on 20th, 21st and 22nd of August this year. Five of the dams on the farm will be used, this is the oldest trout farm in Mpumalanga.

Entry will be limited to 80 anglers on a first entry received basis, so send your completed entry form as soon as possible.

The format of the weekend will be as follows:
* Registration and water draw on Saturday 21 August from 05h30,
* Fishing will be split into four sessions,
* Competitors will fish at each dam over the course of the competition,
* Saturday morning 06:00 – 09:00 and 09:30 – 12:30,
* Saturday afternoon 14:00 – 16:00 and 16:00 – 18:00.
* Dinner and prize giving will be held on the Saturday night from 19:00.

This event will be a fun weekend with competitive fishing but there will also be an element of fundraising for the old age home in Belfast.

Various prizes that will be handed out on the Saturday Night at dinner. The overall winner with the heaviest fish, the heaviest bag and most fish caught as well as various spot and other prizes will be awarded for fun categories.

The entry fee is R390 for adults and R190 for kids under ten, this includes:

iSimangaliso with Advantage Tours

Adventure Escapades recently hooked up with Advantage Tours on the Greater St Lucia wetlands Park. In the middle of winter we enjoyed a sunshiny summer’s afternoon gently skimming across the waters of the estuary. The Advantage Cruiser is custom built to travel in shallow water. This boat has environmentally friendly engines which minimize any impact on the ecology of this world heritage site. There is a lower covered deck, with a little bar for select refreshments as well as a deck upstairs for sun seekers.

Steve our informative skipper punctuated his wealth of knowledge with some dryly humorous lines, just to keep everyone entertained. With his guidance we enjoyed views of some of the largest vegetated dunes in the world, a variety of prolific bird life including the giant secretary bird and mangrove swamps.

The first stirring of excitement was created by a pod of hippo on the right-hand bank, as Steve took us in, closer than we thought safe, he suggested we look a little more to the left. There we spotted three well camouflaged crocodiles basking in the afternoon sunshine. Nobody hasd even noticed then as yet, so well did they blend with their environment.

This relaxing boat ride presented loads of opportunity for the avid photographer, during the stops en route.

We felt so proud to live in this beautiful country as we noticed that so many of the other passengers were tourists, here we were just three hours from home in a well preserved area of tremendous natural beauty. What a blessing!

Teagan the 7 year old, is particularly full of beans! He was 18 months old when he Ziplined for the first time and his ever present companion is a Jack Russell named Kat. Kat accompanied him on the Zipline (check it out on You tube). O ya, the fish is called Dog! We wonder who has the identity crisis.
